Thinking about adopting a dog or cat from the Humane Society of Marion County Here are a few suggestions that might make you experience a little easier First: Go through the dogs/cats on the web site and choose three or four dogs/cats that you particularly like based on both the picture and the bio. Keep in mind that some dogs/cats may not still be available or their personality my not be what you are looking for based on the dogs/cats reaction to you when you walk the dog or just sit and pet the dog/cat. Second: Click on the link below and print out the Dog or Cat Application Form Fill in the application and take it with you when you go to the shelter. Adopting an animal is a very important step that should be well planned for and anticipated by each member of the family. Our Adoption Counselors can assist you in making an appropriate decision regarding the animal that would be best suited for your family and lifestyle, any animal care questions you may have, as well as provide after-care support while your pet is getting acquainted with its new family.
Knowledge and Awareness the key to proper pet care
Each animal’s welfare in our foremost consideration. We require proper facilities to maintain and contain each pet before placement and a home inspection will be completed prior to releasing any newly adopted dog.
Prospective adopters must be at least 18 years of age; Have a picture identification showing your present address (i.e. driver’s license); If renting, have the knowledge and consent of your landlord in writing; and Be able and willing to spend the time and money necessary to provide training, medical treatment and proper care for your new pet on a long-term basis. Adoption fees include the following: · First series of vaccinations · Alteration (should an animal not already be spayed or neutered, it will be so upon adoption) · Heartworm check on dogs over six months of age and heartworm preventative while in our care · Feline Leukemia test on all cats · Avid microchip implantation · Free visual exam by a licensed veterinarian
Our animals come to the shelter from a variety of different sources. Each animal is examined upon entry and their health is routinely monitored while at the Shelter, but there is always a chance that an animal may be incubating a disease without showing any clinical signs. After the seven day return policy has expired, adopted animals are the sole responsibility of the adopter.
