Be a Volunteer

A number of different jobs are available to be performed by volunteers at the Humane Society of Marion County animal shelter. In addition positions are also available at the HSMC Thrift Store. Listed below are the Volunteer Job Descriptions at the animal shelter.    For instance, perhaps you would like to volunteer for a job that would include working with the dogs or perhaps just the cats. Maybe you would like to work in the office or be involved with the customers.  Please review these job descriptions to help you determine the kind of volunteer  job you would prefer.

Once you are familiar with the volunteer positions available, please click on the volunteer application form below, print the form (should be three pages) and then return to this page.

Adoption Volunteer

Adoption volunteers work very hard placing companion animals into permanent, loving and responsible homes.  Duties may include: making a list of all animals available for adoption in the shelter and writing cage numbers or kennel numbers next to names, answering the phone, handing out necessary paper work such as: adoption applications, spay/neuter certificates, volunteer applications and foster applications.  Greeting customers and showing animals to potential adopters.

Clerical Volunteer

We have several options for those volunteers who prefer behind-the-scenes work without interaction with animals.  You will be stuffing envelopes, making phone calls, photocopying, filing, mailing, and assembling dog and cat packets.  Volunteers must have the ability to follow instructions and work independently.  Typing and/or computer skills are helpful.

Outreach Volunteer

As a Humane Society volunteer, you will be helping us share our mission and services with the community.  Duties may include helping with adoptions at events, or representing the Humane Society of Marion County at an information table like the ones at street fairs, art festivals and other major community events.  Volunteers in this area must be able to promote the HSMC and all our services by speaking with members of the public one-on-one.

TLC Volunteer

The goal of the TLC program is to provide comfort, companionship and socialization to dogs and cats at HSMC.  TLC Volunteers enjoy a great deal of physical contact with animals.  The main duty of the TLC Volunteer is to make sure the animals are well cared for and comfortable.  Basic duties include:  exercising animals, cleaning cages and kennels, washing dishes and doing laundry for the animals, hand-on socialization to build confidence for some animals, minor grooming, assisting with feeding and watering and providing toys and fresh blankets for all animals.  Volunteers must have good physical strength and be able to work independently.

JUNIOR VOLUNTEERS

Greeter/Customer Service Volunteer (14-17 year-olds)

You will assist the Customer Service staff greeting and directing the public as they enter the HSMC.  Be the informational person that directs people interested in adopting a pet, looking for their lost companion animal, or needing to drop off an animal to the proper location.  This is an opportunity to use your interpersonal skills and help make the shelter a positive place for visitors.

Appropriate clothes should be worn, from casual and comfortable when working with animals to more appropriate attire for some of our special events.  For safety reasons, we asked that open-toed shoes and shorts not be worn while working at the shelter.  Please keep in mind that when you are working with animals wear something suitable for this type of work that will also be presentable to the public.  Clothes should be clean and neat.

Please do not wear suggestive or distasteful tee shirts, caps, short shorts, etc..
